Shaped Glass Balustrades

Despite often being thought of as a challenging material to work with, glass is in fact incredibly versatile. When using shaped panels of glass to create a balustrade, it can be made to fit exactly the space required. This is an advantage over a balustrade made of wooden spindles, where the spacings must match the rest of the project for it to look right. Glass also looks great in every application or situation.

In this project, there was a large opening on the side of the stairs, between the treads and the ceiling. This created a hazard for small children, as there was no protection at all. However the customer was finding it a challenge to install a balustrade of wooden spindles to match the other side. Due to various restrictions in the overall design of the stairs, glass was really the only viable option.

As the panel of glass needed had several bespoke angles, the easiest way to ensure accuracy was a glass template. We recommend the use of glass templates in situations where there is unusually shaped glass.

In this project, our stand off fixings (Quickcode 770) were used with the threaded timber inserts (Quickcode 033) to fix into the stairs. Threaded timber inserts provide great strength to an installation where there is limited depth to fix into.
